‘The Last Station’ of Tolstoy’s Life

Research the criticism on the recent film that was made of Tolstoy’s life. Do the critics agree on the kind of insight this film gave into his life?

The movie based on the life of the great man Leo Tolstoy has provided critics with some debate on how insightful the film was into his life. The film The Last Station directed by Michael Hoffman 2009 has a lot of mixed reviews from critiques about the actors who play the real-life characters to the portrayal of the last years of Tolstoy’s life. The film is set in 1910 in the last year of Tolstoy’s life and is filled with the constant conflict between Tolstoy and his wife that bore him 13 children, Countess Sofya. While some critics such as Stephen Farber and Kenneth Turan saying that it explores the end of Tolstoy’s life in an accurate depiction between the rivalry of not only between Tolstoy and his wife but also with Sofya and Vladimir Chertkov. While these critics believe that this movie is a good representation of his life, Xan Brooks disagrees with this statement that the film “feels like a reduction, a”. Critic A.O. Scott agrees with Brooks arguing that there is an excellent story in the life of the great writer but has failed to be represented in the 2009 film.
